Weather Helmed

Sooooooooooooo close

February 8th, 2010 · 6 Comments · Boat Work, Oh Crap., Preparing for the trip, The beginning

We are this close to finally pulling out of the slip, away from the dock, out under the Golden Gate and into the big blue sea.  But, today, as we were heading over to Berkeley to fill up on diesel fuel, our engine started overheating *again*.  We thought the problem had been fixed a while ago, but, apparently not.  ARGH.

We were supposed to leave TOMORROW.  TOMORROW.  We are ready – everything is stowed, our icebox and extra food storage is overflowing, we have seasickness patches behind our ears, the boat is eager for the sea and the sails are anxiously awaiting the wind; both of the cars are gone, all goodbyes have been said…  We are ready.

I keep reminding myself that there is a reason for everything and maybe one of these days we’ll know WHY we were delayed by this engine failure, but right now?  Right now, I just want a hot bath and (another) glass of wine, and someone to come fix our engine immediately so we can throw off the docklines TOMORROW.

*sigh*  there is a reason…  I’m sure there is a reason…  and I’m sure I should be thankful somehow.  Thankful for the extra time to prepare.  Thankful for the extra time to get familiar with the sails and the new reefing set-up.  Thankful for the extra day to learn the SSB and get the weatherfaxes set up.  THANKFUL.

But, right now? I’m seriously bummed.  🙁

So excited and bummed at the same time for you. Again, we don’t know each other, but have an adventure of a lifetime. I wish I could do what you are doing.

thanks Ashley 🙂 I (we) appreciate the support and good wishes even when they’re from people we don’t know!!! Like Matt said on his blog, I don’t think people understand that such encouragement is rare 🙂

btw – what’s up with your blog? Did you decide not to do it anymore?

I completely feel for you guys! We had more or less the exact same experience in December, but Brian is still tinkering away with ours. Not to mention, yesterday the starter broke….there goes another $250! I hope you have an “easy” fix and can hit the seas soon.

Hang in there. Maybe it will save you from some nasty weather. It’s so unsettled down here right now… We’ve got a new weather site for when you have wi-fi https://www.fnmoc.navy.mil/public/
    Safe passages!
