We left San Francisco on February 10, 2010 with a plan to head south to Mexico and then make the innocently named "puddle jump" to the South Pacific (!!) this spring. From there, who knows?!?!?!? Maybe Fiji? Australia? New Zealand? For now, we're just thrilled to finally be out at sea!
Matt-
First let me say I know of you and your adventure from the Valiant owners liust, which led me to your site and then to whetherhelmed.
At any rate I saw the video of your dinghy ride and quirky engine. I had a similar problem with a small outbard Evinrude/Johnson and it turned out that I was not opening my gas tank vent and a vacuum was building in the tank, holding back gas flow.Check your vent.
If you have a spare hose and bulb you may want to try that also.
San Diego is quite a great place. I’m go there at least twice a year and am going to br relocating there as my sailing base. While you are there you might want to check out Balboa Park, the Zoo, and Scripps Aquarium.
Also on the water is the Coronado Hotel and the maritime museum over on Harbor Drive just before the Embarcadero. That is a real treat and the also have some tall ships open.and Stars and Stripes is docked ther.
Hoping you and Karen enjoy SD and have a safe adventure.
Your dinghy video is helping us get through the New England winter since we are stuck over here until April. We shipped our sailboat over to Shelter Island in December, so that she could skip the snow and wait for us to arrive. I think we saw s/v Siesta smile as your outboard coughed on your way past Kona Marina (she’s at H dock). We enjoyed a happy hour at Humphrey’s Backstage Live in January and would like to send you there for a drink (and great jazz/blues!).
Hi! Thanks for reading my blog. So glad we could provide you a glimpse of your boat 🙂 at least the dinghy was good for something! You want us to go check on Siesta for you?? We got a bit of a tsunami surge here this morning, but it looked like most of the docked boats weren’t affected too much. Would be happy to double-check though if you don’t already have someone keeping a look-out. Thank you, too, for the drinks! Matt and I were surprised and thrilled to see your comment! I think we may head over that way tonight… Again, let me know if you want us to peek in on your boat.

Thanks SO much for checking on Siesta for us! Proof of floatation is a good thing. If you make it to Humphrey’s between 4 and 7 pm, the drinks (and food) are half price. And the music is free. Always good for a cruiser’s budget! Enjoy!
